Current or Recent Work:

  • Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Deployment Tracking
Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Deployment Tracking. Begun in 1996, this project for the US Department of Transportation involves gathering information on the deployment and integration of ITS nationwide. This is being done with a survey was conducted in four parts: Metropolitan (78 cities), Medium Metropolitan (30 cities), Tourist Areas (20 cities), and Statewide (50 states). Data are gathered on deployment and integration to support assessment of progress toward DOT goals for ITS and to serve as a data source for federal, state, and local transportation professionals and the general public. This is the fourth update for the survey of 78 major metropolitan areas, the other surveys are new for 2002. Results from earlier surveys are available at: http://www.itsdeployment.its.dot.gov/ . More than 2300 on-line surveys were distributed to metropolitan freeway, arterial, transit, and public safety agencies, and to each of the state DOTs. As of September 25, the overall response rate was 83%. Following a review by respondents, data will be published in reports and posted on the web, with a planned completion in May, 2003.
  • ITS Map Database Interoperability Standards
Begun in 1995, this project is for US DOT and involves the development of interoperability standards for the exchange of data containing a geographic location reference. The Location Referencing Message Standard has been published as a standard by SAE for ITS. Work continues to support creation of standards for spatial data interoperability both nationally and internationally.

Significant Publications:

The ITS Deployment Tracking Web Site: http://www.itsdeployment.its.dot.gov . This site contains detailed site reports for each of the 78 metropolitan areas surveyed, and a national summary report for the 2000 data gathering.
